CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Health Facilities (DHF) hired more than 80 new employees for its state-run facilities as well as new recruitment, and adapting to new initiatives.

These changes were made in January and have resulted in new state hires, changed 40 contractors to state employees, and have decreased the need for finding hires by eight percent.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment. We are committed to providing excellent care for our patients, while also ensuring our staff are fairly compensated,” said Michael J. Caruso, DHF Cabinet Secretary.

A classification and compensation system created by the Office of Shared Administration’s Office of Human Resources Management is a new system that is designed to help with increasing recruitment and workplace and employee initiatives. These factors are based on recommendations from a study done by Korn Ferry.

    This initiative includes:

    • New pay rates, which also includes employee tenure.
    • Flexible work schedules, which will help with employee accommodations.
    • Increased incentives for harder shifts, which recognizes the difficulties and challenges that can come from specific shifts.
    • Funding for positions that are hard to fill, which addresses certain needs for recruiters.
    • Appointment incentives, which helps with critical recruitment positions that need to be filled, such as those in the nursing field.

Due to these new actions put in place, DHF has also successfully changed 40 contract nurses to state employees, which resulted in significant savings for taxpayers. The new system also ensures that employees will be keeping their existing benefits package, which includes, health insurance, dental, vision, and life insurance.
