Menthol can improve worst symptoms of Alzheimer's, new study finds

Alzheimer's research may have found a way patients can protect their memory just by inhaling menthol, according to a new study. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease, meaning it worsens over time. Brain changes occur as neurons and connections die. Scientists at Edinburgh Napier University found that when mice with Alzheimer's inhaled menthol, their cognitive ability improved. The experiment, conducted over six months, involved repeatedly exposing mice with Alzheimer's to menthol. Researchers found that it lowered levels of interleukin-1 beta, a protein linked to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's. Menthol was also seen to mimic reducing T-regulatory cells, immune cells that control inflammation and balance the immune system. These new findings suggest a possible treatment for conditions like Alzheimer's.
