    MJA accepting nominations for Hilda Gage Judicial Excellence Award

    The Michigan Judges Association is seeking nominations for its annual Hilda Gage Judicial Excellence Award .



    The award is named in honor of the late Judge Hilda Gage, who served on the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Oakland County Circuit Bench. She was the first female president of the MJA and the first female chairperson of both the Judicial Tenure Commission and the National Conference of State Trial Judges of the American Bar Association.

    The award recognizes a sitting or retired circuit or Court of Appeals judge who has demonstrated:



    • Competence in docket and trial management;


    • Contributions to the legal profession;


    • Contributions through legal scholarship;


    • Dedication to community service.




    Nominees must have been an MJA member in good standing at the time of their service on the bench.

    Nominations will be evaluated by a blue-ribbon committee comprised of attorneys and current and former judges. Nomination packages should include the completed nomination form, the nominee’s curriculum vitae (if available), and any letters of support or other information. All materials must be submitted together.


    The deadline for nominations is Friday, June 28 and 4:30 p.m. All requested materials can be submitted to 31st Circuit Court Judge Daniel A. Dammanat ddamman@stclaircounty.org .

    Gage, who passed away in 2010, was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Law School. She was appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court in 1978, where she served for 18 years and was chosen by her 15 colleagues as the first female chief judge. In 1997, Gage was appointed to the Court of Appeals, where she served until she retired in 2006.
