(WWJ) — Metro Detroit is home to some of the most dangerous intersections in the state of Michigan.

Michigan Auto Law, a firm that specializes in auto crash cases, is taking steps to warn drivers about the most dangerous of them. The firm is launching a billboard safety campaign that will provide both awareness and cautionary messages as they approach the intersections.

The firm is placing billboards at seven of the 10 most dangerous intersections — six of which are in Metro Detroit. The campaign launches this week and will run through Labor Day weekend, strategically timed during what the firm says are the “100 deadliest days of summer” for drivers.

Michigan Auto Law has placed these cautionary billboards at the following intersections, which are among the top ten most dangerous intersections in Michigan:

    • 11 Mile Rd / I-696 at Van Dyke Ave (Warren/Center Line)
    • Schoolcraft Rd at Telegraph Rd (Redford)
    • Martin Parkway at North Pontiac Trail Roundabout (Commerce Township)
    • 18 ½ Mile Rd at Van Dyke Ave (Sterling Heights)
    • Telegraph Rd at 12 Mile Rd (Southfield)
    • 10 Mile Rd at 1-94 (St. Clair Shores)
    • US 131 at Wealthy Street (Grand Rapids)

The firm puts out an annual list of the state’s most dangerous intersections and the six Metro Detroit locations receiving billboards were all at the top of last year’s list.

According to that data, 11 Mile/I-696 at Van Dyke in Warren/Center Line saw more than 200 crashes with 41 injuries in 2022, significantly more than any other intersection in both categories.

Ivan, the owner of a gas station near that intersection, told WWJ’s Charlie Langton he sees crashes all the time.

“People when they leave work, they just try to get home, they just try to get to the freeway so they probably make quick turns,” Ivan said, noting semi trucks turning in the area also often hit cars.

Michigan Auto Law says the billboards will “serve as stark reminders of the potential consequences of distracted driving, urging motorists to stay focused, drive safely and proceed with caution.”

“By placing these billboards as motorists’ approach critical intersections, we hope to alert drivers and encourage them to pay a little more attention. Hopefully, they will make safer choices behind the wheel, or even choose a different route,” said Steven Gursten, President of Michigan Auto Law.
