SPRING LAKE — Borough officials remain in “open conversation” with telecommunications company Verizon regarding its application for 5G poles along Ocean Avenue, says Spring Lake Mayor Jennifer Naughton.

She gave her update during the council’s Tuesday, June 11 meeting, after questions about the status of the application were put forward during public comment.

“The application hasn’t been approved or denied,” said Mayor Naughton. “We asked for some specific information from Verizon and we are still waiting on that information.”

Verizon’s application asks to build five poles along Ocean Avenue and one along Prospect Avenue.

At the council’s April 23 meeting, Mayor Naughton explained that upon receiving an application, the borough has 90 days to respond, however that window has since been extended while the council seeks to learn more about Verizon’s goal and any potential alternatives that might satisfy that goal.

“I can tell you that this council remains adamantly opposed to poles on Ocean Avenue,” said Mayor Naughton on Tuesday. “Our position on that has not changed. Having said that, I think it makes sense to understand what Verizon wants and if there’s alternatives to what Verizon is asking for, so that we can come up with something that is satisfactory to the residents of the borough.”

She said that the matter is being handled by the council’s 5G subcommittee, which most recently met two weeks ago.

That subcommittee, said Councilman Joseph Erbe, includes two professionals, an attorney and a consultant, who were hired by the borough for their knowledge of radio frequency data.
