The Eastern Shore Jousting Association held its first joust of the season on Saturday, May 25, at the Tuckahoe Equestrian Center.

The Mid Atlantic Joust has been held for over 30 years, inviting jousters from the neighboring counties, as well as neighboring states, to come and participate in Maryland’s Official State Sport and kick off the jousting season.

Chairman Diane Sherwood of Cordova welcomed everyone while ESJA Secretary Buck Schuyler gave the history on the joust.

This year featured several first-time riders. August Thomas, maid of watermelon, along with her sister Harper Thomas, maid of sass, and Addison Cooke, maid of Purple Rain, made their debut in the Leadline Class riding on 1 3/4” rings.

Other participants in the Leadline Class were Kieran Patrick, knight of blazing wind; Derek Wooters, knight of Wooters Acres; Katelyn Wooters, maid of Caroline County; Pierson McGinnes, knight of Henderson; Rowan Lyons, maid of nugget; and Karen A. Callahan, maid of another chance.

Winners of the Novice Class riding on 1 3/4” rings were first place Mackenzie Strong, maid of October dreams; second place Bobby Mildenberger, knight of lightning; and third place Samantha Miller, maid of queen of Savannah.

Winners of the Amateur Class riding on 1 1/2” rings were first place Samantha Miller, maid of queen of Savannah; and second place Marleigh Platzke, maid of dazzle.

The Semi Pro Class riding on 1 1/4” rings was won by Michaella Patrick, maid of autumn wind, with second place going to Marleigh Platzke, maid of dazzle.

Janice Enfield, maid of Rabbit Hill Road, won the Professional Class riding on 1” rings, with Michaella Patrick, maid of autumn wind, placing second.

The Sherwood Trophy Challenge was won by Michaella Patrick, maid of autumn wind.

After the crowning ceremony, the fellowship of the day extended with a covered-dish feast.

The next ESJA joust will be held at the Talbot County Fair on Saturday, July 13, at noon.
