The effects of air pollution on the world’s population have been grossly underestimated. A study from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore showed that “ fine particulate matter from 1980 to 2020 was associated with approximately 135 million premature deaths globally.”

This form of air pollution is defined as “particulate matter 2.5 micrometres in diameter or smaller.” Two types of diseases caused over 60% of the deaths over the four decades measured– stroke at 33.3% and ischemic heart disease at 32.7%,

The authors described this as the most extensive study ever conducted because of its length and breadth. Among the triggers the researcher found were unusually high temperatures, stagnant air, vehicle emissions, and wildfires. The researchers also employed new technology: “To understand how PM2.5 pollution affects mortality rates, the researchers studied satellite data from NASA on the levels of fine particulate matter in the Earth’s atmosphere. “

These numbers vary somewhat from those provided by the WHO. They estimate that “air pollution kills 7 million people every year: 4.2 million from outdoor air pollution, and 3.8 million from indoor air pollution from burning wood and charcoal. “

The figure from either study is staggering.
