He was born in an obscure village many years ago. There was no fanfare, no celebration by friends and family, just a quiet birth. In fact, there wasn’t even a hospital in which he could be borned. And what was worse yet, there was no room, no hotel, nor even an overnight inn to receive his presence, just an old barn, and less than that.

He was born in a small stable, perhaps not even big enough to house a donkey or two, and maybe a few cows. Hardly what you would call sanitary conditions. Just his mother and father and a few farm animals, perhaps some sheep, and maybe that cow or donkey, maybe even some ducks or chickens, and a barnyard cat to catch the mice. But I doubt that any mice were caught that night because something wonderful was happening. Something like the world had never seen. Something holy was being born that night.

Out in the countryside, under the stars, a group of shepherds were watching over their sheep. Nothing spectacular was going on, at least not in their eyes. When suddenly the night sky lit up like a thousand candles and a host of angels appeared, singing “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth, peace and good will towards men!”

The shepherds fell to the ground, covering their eyes because of the sudden bright light. They were cowering in fear, just as you and I would have done had we been around for that glorious event. We would be covering our eyes as well wondering what this was all about! When just as suddenly one angel spoke, saying, “Don’t be afraid! For I’m bringing you a message of great joy! A message of good news, for all the people of the earth! For this day, there is born unto you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, born this very night in the city of David, in the town of Bethlehem. Go, for you will find him by this sign, a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” Once again the angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and goodwill towards men!”

When the angels left, just as suddenly as they had come, the shepherds said unto one another, “Come, let’s go quickly unto Bethlehem and see this thing that the Lord has told us about.” And with haste, they made their way to where the young child was, lying in a manger, with only his parents and a few farm animals that had gathered around.

“A Christmas message” you say, “and in June?” Hardly, for this was much more important than just Christmas. This was the most important night that the world had ever known, and can even know today. You see, that night, in that city, really more like a hamlet than a town, was born for you and me a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

A war had been waged in that small cradle, a battle had been won. Oh, not like any battle that has ever been fought in the history of this world, nor even in the history of this nation. It was a battle alright, a battle for the spirit of your soul, and it was won by this Christ child that had been born for you and for me.

Satan, our arch enemy, had tried to destroy Him at his birth. He had sent a king and his soldiers to search for the child only to snuff out his life in his infancy. But they couldn’t find Him, even though he was only a few miles away. Again, the devil tried to destroy Him by nailing Him on the cross of Calvary, but three days later, the resurrected Christ child, now a man, walked out of the tomb in which his body had been laid, breaking the very back of the devil whose greatest joy is to destroy you and me, on earth and in hell.

But he was no match for the One who was born to save us from our sin. Jesus’ promise is simple, but it’s true and sure. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.”

That’s a pretty big word, “whosoever”, but it includes you and me and anyone who believes in the Christ child to be his Savior. Now by faith, by simply believing in what He did for you upon the cross, and by what He accomplished for you by walking out of that grave, providing for you everlasting life, you can receive Him as your Savior and invite Him to be your Lord. Would you do that today?
