Dollar General recently opened its newest DG Market at 131 Winfall Boulevard in Hertford.

The store, which features an expanded selection of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables as well as the other products typically found at Dollar General stores, opened on May 20, according to a press release.

“We are excited to provide Hertford residents with our new DG Market format and look forward to welcoming customers to our new location,” Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development, said in the release. “The new DG Market format will provide the Hertford community with closer access to fresh and healthier foods and a convenient location to purchase the items they want and need at everyday low prices. We hope our customers will enjoy the new store.”

Dollar General stores sell a full range of household products, including food, cleaning supplies, paper products, over-the-counter medicines, hygiene products and baby items. In addition to those products, the new Hertford store features Dollar General’s “new stylish, on-trend home décor and an expanded party preparation selection,” the release states.

The DG Market will employ 10-15 people, depending on the needs of the store, the release said.

To celebrate the DG Market’s opening, Dollar General said it plans to donate 100 new books to a “nearby” elementary school to benefit students in grades K-5. That would be either Perquimans Central School, which teaches students in grades K-2, or Hertford Grammar School, which is for students in grades 3-5.

According to Mapquest, it’s 3 miles from Hertford Grammar to the new DG Market. It’s less than half a mile to Perquimans Central, however.

Nonprofit organizations and libraries within a 15-mile radius of the store may also apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants, the release said. Since its inception in 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $250 million in grants to nonprofits.
