There's nothing like being the parent of a teenager to make you realize that most of your pop culture references are probably pretty outdated. Teens are quick to let you know when your clothes are out of style or your favorite song is "cringe-y" or even that the way you talk is hopelessly uncool. But what if the tables were turned?

In one recent video, a mom quizzes her teen son on the meanings of popular 90's slang words, and he does better than you might expect...but he still manages to make it very clear that no self-respecting kid would ever use any of these terms!

"Asking my teen if he knows slang from the 90's," wrote Tara Clark . Smart kid! Still, you could tell he was very...unimpressed. Like, he knows a little bit about what kids said back in the 90's, but that doesn't mean he approves! Just hearing some of these words brought commenters right back to the good old days, though some people took issue with a couple of the phrases ("Mona Lisa," for example, wasn't typically used the way the mom in this video claims — most people said "Monet" instead, as in classic 90's movie Clueless .) Still, this video makes one thing perfectly clear ...every generation has its own vocabulary!

Why Slang Is Changing Faster Than Ever

As lexicographer Emily Brewster, a senior editor and editorial ambassador at Merriam-Webster, told Refinery 29, slang is shifting more quickly now because it's "becoming popularized more quickly," largely due to social media.

“We, all of us, in the 21st century, have access to the informal language of millions of people and that was never true before...we talked to people in person or on the phone, we watched TV and movies, or we read books and periodicals. Many of those forms of interaction even had a gatekeeper involved — an editor, say — who would keep out more casual forms of speech. So slang was much slower to catch on than it is now."

You might think that slang would be faster to fade now, too, but that's apparently not really the case. As it gets more popular, it "becomes entrenched in our common language," until the "final stage," which is when brands start using slang...and most of the time, that's when it finally stops being cool .

Then it's on to the next big new thing...or back to one of the old ones!
