His brother David Siegfried, organizer of a GoFundMe for the late artist, did not disclose a cause of death, but wrote that the family joined him in his final days to share “memories of his time in music, childhood and family.” James Chance was 71 years old.

But Kaytranada arrived in the era of demystified production, with advanced engineering tools and infinite audio libraries mere clicks away. In developing his signature sound, he focused less on discrete elements—his peers could replicate those anyway—than their intricate arrangement. On his 2016 breakthrough, 99.9%, the tempos, syncopation, and layering techniques were Kaytranada’s own, even when the instrumentals and melodies came from elsewhere.

It’s rough out there for lots of indie rock bands, but Austin’s Good Looks have really been through the shit. The day after they released their 2022 debut, Bummer Year, guitarist Jake Ames was nearly killed in a hit-and-run. The band put off touring while he slowly recovered, and when they did finally hit the road, their van caught fire and they lost everything: gear, instruments, laptops, merch, personal effects, everything. A less committed group might have taken either of these tragedies as a sign from the universe, but to their credit Good Looks are a foolhardy lot. While they don’t address those trials on their follow-up, Lived Here for a While, they play like their lives depend on it.

Every line in her bubbly, warehouse-rave rap feels like it should be followed by a double pink heart emoji, even when she’s a little lovelorn, like on personal favorite “Fairytale Boy.” Her latest single “Charge You Up!” is just as good: a hyper, clubby dance song with sped-up vocals and lyrics that suggest she’s bored at home and dying to go explore the world. “Feel like I’m trapped in a cage, so I just go around it,” she hiccups. It would be melancholic if it didn’t sound like the audio equivalent of an Aliyah’s Interlude outfit.

Aphex Twin has announced an expanded edition of his album Selected Ambient Works Volume II. The pioneering 1994 LP will be released in all formats for the first time October 4 via Warp, arriving in digital, 3xCD, double-cassette, and 4xLP standard and box set editions, which include a fold-out poster, sticker sheet, and booklet containing sketches for the original artwork by designer Paul Nicholson. The release also features the previously vinyl-only track “#19,” which Aphex Twin has also shared today, alongside two additional tracks, “Th1 [Evnslower]” and “Rhubarb Orc. 19.53 Rev.” Check out “#19” and the expanded edition tracklist below.

Selected Ambient Works Volume II

This new J.P. album, Coming Out Party, is completely bizarre. There are songs that sound like Khalid if he made twerk music. Ditties that belong on pop-country radio, if they would give him a chance. Full-throated gospel vocals over Milwaukee lowend handclaps. I mean, c’mon, the project kicks off with J.P. getting a little freaky over a sample of Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman.” I think I dig it? Ask me tomorrow and my opinion might change. But I’m for sure into “Over Here,” where the college athlete turned viral rap star churns out one of those soft and cozy party anthems he’s so good at. He sounds like he’s swooning while he gives out twerk commands, with twangy, fluffy melodies that would be sweet enough for Radio Disney if he wasn’t so raunchy. I’m setting the over/under on dancefloor meet-cutes that will happen to “Over Here” this summer at somewhere in the triple digits.
