We see a lot of online creators transform IKEA cabinets and shelves into closets, built-ins, wardrobes, etc. I mean, the names PAX, BILLY, and KALLAX are just part of our natural vocabulary now! But recently, we have been seeing creators take on projects with the not-so-viral IKEA products, creating unique home decor pieces that we can't wait to replicate.
If you're looking to save a little cash while decorating your home, then projects like these are going to be your greatest inspiration. You only need a few hours, barely any power tools, and a cheap IKEA piece. Let's get started!
I decided to mix two of my favorite things, wood & stripes into one stunning little wall cabinet! I’ve seen these IKEA moppes storage boxes for a while and always wanted to create something with them. The little #diy handles are just the perfect addition to the drawers 🤎 ps. I added two small D rings to the backside to hang it on the wall
DIYer and IKEA hack connoisseur Drew ( @lonefoxhome on TikTok) seriously just needs his own home decor show at this point. This guy is so creative and has the ability to transform any random piece of furniture into a completely unique luxury item. And he always keeps it affordable!
This time around, he saw the adorable Moppe storage chests at IKEA and decided it was time to create a display shelf for his living room. When we say this DIY is affordable, we mean it!
What He Needed to Get Started
Here's his supply list so you can recreate this project too.
- (3) IKEA Moppe storage chests ($29.99 each)
- wood glue
- clamps (optional)
- tape
- wood stain
- wooden beads
- string or twine
While usually the Moppe drawers sit with the tab facing front, Drew wanted to create his own pull handles so he decided to flip the drawers so the backs were exposed instead.
He stacked the three storage chests on top of each other and secured them into place with wood glue, using clamps to ensure they stayed in place while drying.
For the adorable striped look, Drew took strips of tape and covered the entire piece, leaving a tape's width between each strip. He then dotted on wood stain to the exposed stripes.
For the drawer handles, he stained his wooden beads with the same stain and then drilled tiny holes into the center of each drawer. Using twine, he pulled the beads through the twine and pulled the twine through the holes, leaving the bead at the front and tying the twine inside the drawer itself.
Finally, he attached the entire piece to his wall for an adorable floating display cabinet. Not only is this under $100 to make, but it's just so cute.
