Walmart Announces Change to Make Shopping Easier but Not Everyone Is On Board

Prices seem to be getting higher, even with many retailers and restaurants offering discounts. Sticking to a budget is a must for most families, but that can be hard to do when the price tags for the foods and other goods you need or want are missing or wrong.

Walmart is rolling out a solution for that particular issue, and while many people will love this, others aren't going to like it too much because it involves more automation.

But it may just be the way of the future.

Everything Has Gone Digital, It Seems

Walmart is ensuring that prices on the shelf will always be present and accurate, thanks to some new technology.

Walmart stores have more than 120,000 items on the shelves, and that can be a lot for employees to keep up with. They have to keep things updated, sometimes changing out thousands of labels in each store weekly, and maybe even more often when there are sales.

That is why, by 2026, they will be changing paper labels in 2,300 stores, according to a recent announcement. Instead, digital shelf labels will be the new norm.

These are already being tested in a Grapevine, Texas, store, where shelf prices are now changed via mobile app, giving Walmart employees more time to help customers.

    Benefits of Digital Shelf Labels

According to Walmart, the new labels will not only ensure that consumers see accurate prices, but the digital labels will also simplify the stock replenishment process.

From the mobile app, an employee can place an LED on the shelf tag when an item needs to be restocked. The flashing light will help people restocking the shelves find the location faster. A light can also be used for online order selection and fulfillment, making it faster and more accurate to complete orders.

Everyone knows that certain times of the week are better for shopping for certain products than others, and these new digital tags will help keep prices up-to-date faster.

Sadly, some people won't like this. They see this type of automation as a threat to human workers, much like self-checkouts.

But Walmart has already started making changes to how it operates self-checkout stations, and these new digital tags still need a human worker to update them

Early last month, Walmart rolled back prices on nearly 7,000 items and added a new brand to stores , so these digital tags will come in handy as the retail giant tries to keep costs down.
