SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Board of County Commissioners has banned the sale and use of certain types of fireworks within unincorporated portions of Santa Fe County for at least the next 30 days. The resolution does not ban all types of fireworks.
“Currently, there are two or more wildfires burning in the State of New Mexico, including the Indios and Blue 2 fires,” Fire Marshal Jaome Blay said in a press release. “Due to the significant fire danger and prevailing drought conditions, the New Mexico State Forester has concurred with our decision to ban the use of fireworks because abnormally warm temperatures, low humidity, high winds, and the abundance of dry fuel material increase the chances of fire incidents. Under these circumstances, this ban will reduce the likelihood of an accidental human-ignited wildland fire, improve public and firefighter safety, and preserve property in Santa Fe County.”
New Mexico gas prices relatively low as summer travel begins The resolution bans missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices on unincorporated county land. On wildlands within Santa Fe County, all fireworks are banned, the resolution notes.
The county says the following types of fireworks are NOT banned by the resolution. They are only permitted on pavement, barren land, or land with a “readily accessible source of water”:
- Ground and hand-held sparkling devices
- Cone fountains
- Crackling devices
- Cylindrical fountains
- Flitter sparklers
- Ground spinners
- Illuminating torches
- Wheels
