DANIELS, WV (WVNS) — Thursday was the final day of Hospice of Southern West Virginia’s Camp Hope 2024.

Third Annual Elder Abuse Awareness Walk hosted by Family Refuge Center

The camp is aimed at helping children ages 7 to 17 process the grief they feel after the loss of a loved one.

Janett Green, Chief Executive Officer for Hospice of Southern West Virginia, said one thing they focus on is coping mechanisms.

“So, a lot of these things are… It’s okay to be mad, it’s okay to be sad, it’s okay to be anxious, the emotions that you would have with the grief process. And so, letting them know that it’s okay to share that,” said Green. “See, we as adults sometimes, we are dealing with our own grief, so sometimes it’s hard for us to help our kids process that grief as well.”

A couple of the coping mechanisms campers did were memorial stones and memory boxes.
Camp Hope offers counseling services and discussions on grief as well as letting the kids have fun.

Children are encouraged to play laser tag and swim in the pool.

Camp Hope is offered yearly through Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
