Massive rainstorms hit Florida, costing tens of millions of dollars by driving insurance prices up and lowering real estate values. Some insurance companies have even left the state because of significant losses. The first wave of storms dropped over a foot of water in some areas. Rain fell at the rate of several inches per hour. A new set of storms is about to hit the state, which will flood ground that is already saturated. One of the most problematic aspects of this heavy rain is that it is not caused by huge hurricanes, which has been the case in the past. The hurricane season will bring yet another period of flooding. Climatecrisis247 believes that long-term forecasts of Florida flooding predicted that really heavy flooding would hit later in the decade, along with the property damage that comes with it. The flooding this year shows that this may not be true at all. Insurance companies are leaving the state because they believe very heavy damages from storms have already started.

According to the US Refugee Program, over 100 million people will be displaced from their homes by the end of this year. Climate change will make an already terrible problem worse. The program’s new report shows, “At the end of 2023, an estimated 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing the public order.” The report adds, “Without urgent adaptation, mitigation and measures to address loss and damage, climate change impacts are expected to increasingly, and disproportionately, affect climate vulnerable States and communities, including forcibly displaced people.” Climatecrisis247 believes the observation is not new, but it takes a different angle from other studies. Many reports show that climate change itself will be the reason for the displacement of hundreds of millions of people. People will become refugees for this additional reason.

    Climate Crisis In Distant Places

New data show that climate change is affecting agriculture in Mongolia. According to Newsweek, over 7.1 million cattle have been killed by drought combined with heavy snow. This weather pattern is known as a “dzud.” The effects of these weather patterns are the worst in half a century. Climatecrisis247 believes that damage to agriculture worldwide is among the worst results of climate change because it can lead to famine and the displacement of parts of the population. Usually, these displaced people need help to go to places where the chances for successful farming aren’t any better.

Rich Nations Run Out Of Climate Money

There is growing pessimism that major, rich nations will invest in slowing climate change in underdeveloped countries. Reuters reports that the signs of this are happening ahead of the U.N. COP29 climate summit in November. The news service reports, “Preparatory talks among countries’ climate negotiators, due to finish on Thursday in Bonn, Germany, have laid bare the rifts between governments over who should pay, and how much.” One estimate is that $1.4 trillion per year will need to be spent in these underdeveloped nations between this year and 2030. Reuters reports further, “That would be a four-fold increase from current levels. It includes public finance, as well as private finance and funding from sources including development banks.” Climatecrisis247 believes that it is impossible to get richer nations to provide money for an increased investment of this magnitude because of the finances of richer countries and political changes in some of them.
