Five Below is a relative newcomer to the retail space, having been founded in 2002, but it has been on a rapid growth trajectory that shows few signs of slowing down. The chain’s name comes from the fact that most items (though not all) are priced at $5 or less .

    Binoculars

The popular YouTuber Chic on the Cheap complained that you could barely see out of the binoculars sold at Five Below once the image is magnified. You can probably get better quality binoculars elsewhere for a lower price.

    Water Bottles

Inexpensive plastic water bottles are known to leach chemicals into the water if they sit for too long. The potential safety hazard is a good reason to pass on these items at Five Below.

    Candy and Snacks

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with the candy, protein bars and other food items sold at Five Below. But you want to check the expiration date because items are often sold cheaper if they are about to expire.

    Batteries

Batteries are not cheap — nor should they be. You can save money when you buy off-brand batteries at Five Below, but the batteries probably won’t last as long as more expensive brands.

    Pet Toys

Many shoppers have complained that the cheap pet toys sold at Five Below can easily be ripped apart into small pieces that pets can swallow.

    Beauty Products

Makeup, moisturizers and sunscreen are other products you don’t necessarily want to scrimp on — especially if you have sensitive skin. In that case, you’re better off spending more money on established name brands.

    Computer Accessories

Considering how much money you probably put into your computer, there’s no reason to buy cheap off-brand accessories that might break or malfunction under regular use. You could end up paying more to replace them than you would spend buying sturdier, more expensive accessories to begin with.

    Toys and Games

Inexpensive toys often break easily and need to be replaced often. They can also pose a danger to young children.
