New coach hired Northland College welcomed Nicholas Nemec as the new cross country head coach for both mens and womens teams on June 10. Nemec is an Ashland native with an extensive background as both a coach and standout distance runner. As a collegiate harrier for the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets, he was part of the 2017 UMAC conference champion team and, as an Ashland Oredocker, (2012 graduate) Nemec was a four time state qualifier. Most recently, Nemec has been a physical education instructor at Lake Superior Elementary in Ashland while also serving as coach for middle school track and field teams. He is eager to get started at Northland, he remarked.

“It is an honor to accept this position, and I am excited about the opportunity ahead at Northland College,” stated Nemec. “Coaching is my passion, and I can’t wait to get to work right away.”

GCC Samson commits to Northland Gogebic Community College women’s basketball player, sophomore Hanna Hoskin, has committed to playing for the Northland College LumberJills basketball team in fall of 2024, it was announced on June 10. A Minneapolis native, the five foot, seven inch Hoskin played two years for the Samsons, and averaged 6.9 points per game last season as a shooting guard. A strong student, she was named to the All-NJCAA academic third team. Northland will allow her to continue her scholastic and athletic journey, Hoskin noted.

“I chose Northland, because it’s somewhere I believe I can develop and grow as an athlete and student,” she said, adding that she is excited about “getting to play with a new team of girls and making friendships. I look forward to being part of something with a big purpose, and I am eager to continue (working towards) my degree as well.”

The LumberJills program is under the direction of new Head Coach Corey Sackmann, who has made recruiting athletes with local connections a priority.
