JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News’ parent company, Nexstar Media Group, is celebrating 28 years of broadcasting. To mark the anniversary, our station is donating our time to give back to the region.

Transporting millions of pounds of food out to communities in Luzerne, Lackawanna, Wyoming, and Susquehanna counties.

    Founder’s Day of Caring

It’s all in a day’s work at CEO Weinberg’s Northeast Regional Food Bank in Jenkins Township.

“We are seeing so many families either coming for the first time to a food pantry or just having to come more frequently because their money just isn’t stretching.”

That need continues to rise, with staggering statistics from this year alone. As of this week, the food bank has provided meals to more than 401,000 individuals across our region.

“It’s something that you often suffer silently with so making the food resources widely available in the community and making sure that we have broad support is so critical to fighting hunger in Northeastern Pennsylvania.”

A fight that can’t be done without support that’s why crews with 28/22 News volunteered their time this week at the food bank. Celebrating our parent company Nexstar Media Group’s 28th year of broadcasting.

The extra hands are welcomed as volunteers and donations are in high demand, especially as students are home for summer.

“Families are now looking for different ways to afford to put meals on the table now serving three meals a day, rather than you know maybe just one during the school year.”

This Founder’s Day also comes just ahead of the kick-off of the 28/22 News’ Hunger Free Summer campaign. A six-week partnership with the food bank and Weis to help fight hunger for local families.

Our first day will be on Wednesday at the Weis in Mountain Top.

Those who would like to donate to the CEO Weinberg’s Northeast Regional Food Bank, may do so here .
