Researchers at the University of Texas found that mothers speak 16% less to their babies when they are using their phones. Shorter intervals of phone use, one to two minutes, are worse for speech language and decrease a mother’s baby talk by 26%. Short phone usage usually involves non-verbal actions like texting or checking e-mails, while longer usage, like calls or videos, involves speech. According to senior researcher Kaye de Barbara, the “sample had an average of 4.4 hours of phone use per 12-hour period.” Researchers advise new parents "to be cognizant of the impact phones can have on their ability to be attuned to their child's needs.”
