Regulators this week cleared Ameren Missouri to purchase a 150 MW solar facility currently under construction in Illinois, as part of a plan to double its Renewable Solutions program.

The Cass County Renewable Energy Center is currently under construction, but Ameren Missouri has been looking for ways to bolster its program in the face of high participation levels, and the new center fit the bill. At least seven organizations have recently joined or increased their participation level in the Renewable Solutions program.

“Demand remains very strong for programs that bring businesses ready-made solutions to help them reach their sustainability goals,” Mark Birk, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri, said. “Working collaboratively with participating organizations, we’re able to innovate, support continued investment in the region, and help all our Missouri customers.”

With the approval of the Missouri Public Service Commission, Ameren will be able to proceed with acquisition, which could see the Cass County facility’s energy pulled onto the grid by year’s end. On top of this, Ameren Missouri is also building the 150 MW Boomtown Renewable Energy Center in White County, Illinois to support the same programs. As with Cass County, it should be operational by the end of the year.

By signing up, companies allow the Renewable Solutions program to support development of renewable energy in the area. In return, they receive renewable energy credits. Participants include companies like Air Products, Mastercard and Walmart.
