SAUK COUNTY, Wis. -- The Merrimac Ferry was closed shortly after midnight Friday due to a vehicle being removed from the water near the south landing, Wisconsin Department of Transportation spokesperson Michael Bie said. It is now reopened.

Inspections of the landing checked for any damage. The ferry was not involved in the incident that occurred at 10:56 p.m.

Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies located two people that were in the vehicle on scene. The passenger was transported to a hospital. Officers determined the driver was impaired by alcohol, took him to jail and referred a charge of operating while intoxicated first offense. Channel 3000 will not name the driver until they are officially charged.

WisDOT said the Columbia County Sheriff's Department was the agency handling the incident. The sheriff's office said they were not providing any information at this time. .
