If you see someone mistreating their pet, is it your responsibility to step in ?

That’s what one dog lover was asking on Reddit. The user said they took matters into their own hands when it came to their neighbor's dog .

Their 55-year-old neighbor and loves her dog but was unable to take care of it. She would leave the pup in her yard all the time, barking day and night.

“He is quite clearly without water, without food. He's covered in fleas, and she comes home and she brings him in every other day,” the user said.

The neighbor talks about how much she loves him all the time, but then leaves him out in the extreme heat for long periods of time.

Her reasoning is that the dog likes it out there, but the user said the dog looks miserable outside.

“I said to her before like maybe you should let him stay in the garage or [something], it's so hot, and she said, no he likes it out there – even though he clearly doesn't.”

The user has tried to get the dog into their own yard to be able to take care of it, but it’s not well trained. It can be really vicious to strangers.

Instead, they decided to call the dog pound and say it was being neglected. The pound came and took the dog.

Many commenters told them they did the right thing.

“Good job, that dog was likely going to die at her hands, you saved its life,” one wrote.

Another said: “You did the right thing. You tried to talk to her and it made no difference. I couldn’t sit and watch a dog being neglected either. I don’t think she loves the dog, she just wants people to think she is the kind of person who loves dogs .”

Someone else, however, said the pound isn’t a good place for it either.

“You may very well have just got that dog killed. There's far better ways to resolve that situation.”
