SUFFOLK, Virginia — Suffolk Police Department has released the name of the man they say gained unauthorized access to Kilby Shores Elementary School on Friday. According to a media release, Vontrail Marquis Thorpe, 42, of Suffolk, has been charged with two counts of abduction, Trespassing (F), Disorderly Conduct (M), Possession of Schedule I/II substance on School Property and Breaking and Entering.

On Friday, June 14, 2024, at 11:32 a.m., Suffolk Emergency Communication Center received notification of an unauthorized person at Kilby Shores Elementary in the 100 block of Kilby Shores Dr. The first officer arrived on-scene at 11:34 a.m. The adult male was found in a bathroom occupied by students, where he prevented school staff from entering the bathroom prior to police arrival. Suffolk Police detained one unarmed individual, an adult male, at 11:40 a.m. without incident. The school went into a code red status during the incident but is currently in a code green status. No injuries were reported.

A letter from Kilby Shores Elementary from principal Lorrie Banks said, “While students and staff were leaving the building for recess, an intruder entered the building. Staff members immediately noticed the unauthorized individual. The school was placed on a code yellow and authorities were contacted.”

The letter goes on to say the staff was aware of the trespasser’s whereabouts, and no students or staff were harmed. Police arrived quickly and took the suspect into custody.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
