    Despite potential personnel budget woes, state officials are losing no sleep over Burnet County jail operations.

    Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) officials inspected both county jail facilities last month. According to the report reviewed by the Burnet County Commissioners Court during their June 11 meeting, TCJS jail inspectors found zero deficiencies at the main jail facility, 900 County Lane.

    Nor did inspectors discover any defects at the remote holding lockup in Burnet next to the county's Courthouse Annex, 1701 E. Polk. Too, the inspectors issued no remedial orders for either location.

    "This achievement is a direct result of your commitment to excellence and dedication to a safe, secure and sanitary facility," Brandon S. Wood TCJS Executive Director wrote to Sheriff Calvin Boyd in a letter dated May 30.

    Also, the director praised the commissioners for providing the jail with "essential budgetary support." After they fin ished general business, the commissioners convened for a workshop to discuss the county budget for FY 2025. Before the

    workshop, Oakley mentioned the county had not yet received new property appraisal information.

    Sewer Variance

    Turning to another matter, the commissioners approved the request for a variance from on- site sewage facilities reg ulation to permit place- ment of the drain field for the Spicewood Bap tist Church on property owned by its next-door neighbor, the Spicewood Community Center.

    The commissioners approved the request, mainly to prevent the re- moval of two impressive oak

    trees from church property. Both church and center representatives requested the variance, Burnet County Development Services Director Herb Darling told the commissioners.

    Flag Day

    During time set aside for public comment, Burnet resident Stephen Anderson pointed out June 14 is Flag Day. To commemorate the event, Anderson recited “That Ragged Old Flag" re corded by Johnny Cash.

    Also, Anderson unfurled one large Star-Spangled Banner and placed Old Glory into a flag pole, to stand floor to ceiling like a rock in side the courtroom along its north side windows through Flag Day.

    Previously, the flag flew aboard the USS Sa lem, a heavy U.S. Navy cruiser, Anderson said.

    Attendees at the meeting included Chad Collier, slated to be sworn in as the next Pct.

    3 commissioner Jan. 1, 2025. (Find the story on Page 1).

    During the invocation before official business, Oakley recited the Lord's Prayer.

    Also, during the June 11 meeting, the commissioners:

    • Agreed to request bids for new windows to be installed at the Briggs Community Center;

    • Approved the bond for Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Debra Bindseil;

    • Approved the Burnet County Road Inventory Report;

    • Approved the preliminary plat for Spice- wood Gardens in the 100 block of Parr Ave - nue as well as the replat of Thunderbird Square, Phase 1, Lot 5, to be known as Thunderbird Square, Phase 2; and

    • Approved a Burnet

    County Subdivision Regulations variance request by Coyett Mark Hurst for BCAD parcel 53736, as well as a variance request by John and Tara Mizell for BCAD parcels 48744 and 48745 in the 6200 block of CR 207.

    The next regular meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, is reset for the same time, Friday, June 28.
