A second American man has gone missing on a Greek island just days after a former US police officer vanished.

Greek authorities are looking for a US tourist who was last seen at a tavern in Mathraki, located on the west of Corfu island. The man had been staying with a Green-American friend, authorities told ABC news. A friend alerted authorities after he failed to return home on Thursday.

The friend told authorities he then found the door of the house he was residing in open, the lights on and the air conditioning unit on. The man's US identification and other travel documents had reportedly gone missing also. It comes days after a retired cop has disappeared on a Greek island as temperatures skyrocket just days after a beloved British TV doctor was found dead on another island.

Eric Calibet, a 59-year-old tourist from the US, vanished on Tuesday after he went out on a solo hike on the Greek island of Amorgos. Greek media reports that the ex-cop left the port settlement of Aegiali, on the north west of the island, shortly after 7am on Tuesday.

It's thought he was headed to Katapola, the island's main port located on the west side. The hike is supposed to take around four hours from where he set off, but when he didn't return eight hours later, a friend grew concerned and reported him as missing . A search was launched on Tuesday afternoon with reinforcements called in from Naxos island. Police have also requested data from mobile operators in a bid to determine the man's last known location. Authorities have been unable to contact Calibet via either of his two mobile phones.

According to local media reports, the last message he sent was to his sister which was a picture of a trail sign. A rescue operation has since been launched, with reinforcements called in on Wednesday from the nearby Naxos island.

In another Greek island mystery turned tragedy, British doctor Michael Mosley, the beloved TV doctor and nutritionist died last week after taking a walk through the wilderness on the island of Symi. Search crews spent nearly four days looking for the 67-year-old before he was discovered behind a wall just feet away from a resort on Agia Marina beach.

A post-mortem examination later revealed Michael had died at around 4pm on Wednesday of natural causes, with no initial signs of injury. Separate toxicology and histology reports have now been ordered. Physio Chris Byrne, a lecturer in sports and health sciences at Exeter University, said the circumstances surrounding Michael's death bore all the hallmarks of a fatal heatstroke. He spoke out, saying it showed the dangers of venturing out to exercise during intense heat.

Warnings were issued for extreme weather on the Dodecanese island last week as temperatures were projected to reach 40C. Dr Mosley's age was also highlighted by Chris as a risk factor, humans' ability to regulate our body temperature declining as we age.

He told the Daily Express that "the tragic story of Michael Mosley illustrates the rare but potentially lethal effect of combining physical activity in high environmental heat.” Any sporting event on the island that day would have been deemed too "high risk" and canceled due to the heat, Chris said.
