Here's where you can cool off during the heat wave

While it may seem nice outside today, dangerous heat is coming our way starting Sunday. Multiple cities across the area are opening cooling centers to chill out in.

Cuyahoga County

The following rec centers will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Zelma George — 3155 Martin Luther King Jr Drive., Cleveland
• Collinwood — 16300 Lakeshore Blvd., Cleveland
• Gunning — 16700 Puritas Ave., Cleveland
• Kovacic — 6250 St Clair Ave., Cleveland
• Fredrick Douglas — 15401 Miles Ave., Cleveland
• Zone — 6301 Lorain Ave., Cleveland
• Halloran Skating Rink — 3550 West 117th Street, Cleveland

Additionally, all rec centers in Cleveland will serve lunch to those who are 18 and younger from noon to 1 p.m. daily. On Wednesday, only the six centers listed above will serve lunch.
Ashland County

• Ashland County Sheriff's Office Annex — 1205 E. Main St., Ashland
• Kroc Center - 527 E. Liberty St., Ashland
• Savannah Trinity Lutheran Church — 508 Center St., Ashland
• Hayesville Fire Station 8 — 8 High St., Hayesville
• Perrysville Fire Station — 181 East 3rd St., Perrysville
• Polk - Jackson Fire Station — 209 East Congress Street, Polk

Medina/Wayne counties

• Rittman Rec Center — 200 Saurer St., Rittman
  
  • The pool and rec center will be open for free this week.
• Wayne County Public Library — 220 West Liberty Street in Wooster.
• Orrville Public Library — 230 North Main Street in Orrville.
• St. Stephen's Hackman Hall — 44 Britton Street in West Salem.
  

Summit County

• Summit Lake Community Center — 380 W. Crosier St., Akron

  • The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. if/when temperatures reach above 90 degrees with the heat index. The center will announce if the cooling center is open by 5 p.m. the day prior via social media.
• Active Adult Center — 500 W Hopocan Ave., Barberton
  
  • Open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Wednesday.

• Lake Anna YMCA — 500 W Hopocan Ave., Barberton

  • Open Wednesday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. An ID is required for entry.

Lorain County

• Oberlin — First Church, 106 N Main St. — Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Oberlin Public Library — 65 S Main St. — Open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Oberlin — OEAC Seniors — 90 N Professor St. — Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How to stay safe in the heat

• Stay hydrated
• Stay out of the sun
• Get breaks inside/with air-conditioning
• Take breaks if you work outside
• Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
• Get outside in the morning or evenings when it is not as hot
• Remember car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes during hot or warm weather. Never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles.
