'I asked for advice on how to request money from my wedding guests - people's response was brutal'

An engaged couple has sparked debate by adding a contentious detail to their wedding invites. Together for six years and parents to a three-year-old, they've established a life together before deciding to get married.

Eschewing the norm, they're asking for honeymoon contributions instead of traditional gifts . "We just skipped around with the steps and left getting married last so we don't need wedding gifts," the future bride posted in a Facebook group, previewing the invite draft.

The invite specified: "In lieu of traditional wedding gifts, the bride and groom have asked for gifts to their honeymoon fund."

They're dispatching invites soon for their mid-October wedding, boasting a "Great Gatsby meets fairy forest theme."

Yet, the bride is worried over the phrasing of their unique request, reports the Mirror US .

"One issue is how to ask that we don't need wedding gifts but would prefer gifts in the honeymoon fund," she penned. "Please help, I'm so lost and don't want to sound rude at all."

She confessed they've exceeded their wedding budget.

Their approach met mixed reactions online, with one blunt comment on Facebook: "Don't ask for money or gifts. There is no non-tacky way to ask for money or gifts. The end."

"It's so easy to 'ask' for money though without being tacky. You either don't make a registry at all and people read between the lines, or you make a registry that has like two things you actually need on it," one user pointed out.

Though some users had no problem with the cash request.

Other users were left scratching their heads over the wedding's chosen theme.
