Inmate dies after Hernando jail incident

An inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center died at a local hospital on Saturday, deputies said.

The inmate had been hospitalized following an incident between two inmates at the detention center the day before, according to a media release from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Details of the case and the nature of the injuries that led to the inmate’s death have not been disclosed. An investigation is ongoing, the release said.

The inmate was taken to a local hospital in Hernando County where he was pronounced dead.

“An investigation into the incident remains active. There is no additional information available at this time,” said Michael Terry, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

A month ago, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said a man died while in custody at the Falkenburg Road Jail due to medical issues. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office also reported early in May a fatal incident after an inmate was found unresponsive in his housing area.
