The 2024 Copa América (Spanish for American Cup) kicks off on Thursday night when defending champion Argentina faces Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Copa América is one of the oldest men's international soccer tournament in the world. It has been played for over a century, beginning when CONMEBOL, the soccer governing organization of South America, organized and played the first tournament in 1916. The most recent tournament occurred in the summer of 2021 when Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 in the final for Lionel Messi's first major title (Argentina then won the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar).
The U.S. is hosting the tournament for the second time. In 2016, the U.S. hosted the Copa during its centennial, as Chile defeated Argentina in the final for its second Copa América title.
