Can't say I had this on my bingo card for 2024. Koe Wetzel is gearing up to release his 9 Lives album, which is due out everywhere on July 19th, but he has already confirmed that a deluxe edition is on the way soon too. In an interview with
Billboard , the Texas rocker revealed that the 9 Lives deluxe issue will include a cover of the late rapper XXXTENTACION's "Depression & Obsession," which was featured on his critically-acclaimed debut studio album 17 , which was released in 2017. The rapper, whose legal name was Jahseh Onfroy, is listed as the writer and producer of the song, and it has a very stripped back, almost acoustic production which is a stark contrast to much of the popular rap music that's on the radio today. He incorporated tons of styles from other genres in his music, though, from trap to hip hop, R&B and even some punk rock. In all honesty, when you go through the lyrics and really dive into "Depression & Obsession," I can totally see how it's a fit for Koe both lyrically and sonically, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what he does with it. Koe says he included it because XXXTENTACION is one of his favorite underground rap artists, and he always like to "throw something kinda left field" into all of his records:
"We did an XXXTENTACION cover of 'Depression & Obsession.' It’s going to be on the deluxe, after the record comes out. H e was one of my favorite underground rap artists, and I always like to throw something kinda left field into my records. I put my own spin to it, and I’m really excited for people to hear it." The young rapper amassed a cult following during his short career, and was tragically shot and killed in June of 2018 near a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida at just 20 years old. You can listen to the original below if you've never heard it before, and stay tuned for more in terms of 9 Lives deluxe... it's the first time Koe has ever put out a deluxe album, and I'm definitely excited to know that even more music than we thought it coming soon from him.
