Fat Joe feels that Chris Brown was well on his way to being the next Michael Jackson until his infamous incident with Rihanna transpired. Joe discussed Brown’s career during an Instagram Live over the weekend, praising the singer and his legacy.

The emcee asserted that Chris Brown’s domestic violence case prevented him from properly being anointed as MJ’s successor. However, regardless of “cancel culture,” Joe feels he still deserves to be seen in that light. “If Chris Brown never got into the controversy with Rihanna, we would be calling him Michael Jackson right now,” he stated. “Not like Michael Jackson — Michael Jackson. He is the most talented singer, artist, performer, and hitmaker of our time.

“There’s nobody even close to Chris Brown, and it’s time we move past [the domestic violence case]. It’s been 20-something years that I know of [sic]— there’s no more incidents. We gon’ let this lifetime go by without saying the truth?… What happens is, when the truth is an unpopular decision, everybody gets scared to say it. They get canceled — especially famous people. But you know, the streets — they know what it is. Streets always know, they tell you the truth.”

The Terror Squad boss then gave an example of the “streets” still rocking with entertainers despite the internet or mainstream public opinion falling out of favor for them, specifically namedropping R. Kelly. Fat Joe alleges that the streets are still bumping Kelly’s discography despite being sentenced to 20 years for child sexual abuse.

The “Lean Back” artist concluded his brief PSA by reiterating that he is simply trying to be honest and wanted people to stop “lying” about Chris’ talents and impact. Fat Joe also made it clear that he doesn’t condone domestic violence and isn’t trying to downplay Rih and Brown’s traumatic experience.

“So what I’m tryna say is that it’s a shame that we lying and we not giving it up to the king of R&B,” he added. “We be thinking he could battle Michael Jackson, that’s all I’m tryna say. I’m not lying. If you really look at his body of work and you look at all his hits, you see what he does.”

Joe previously compared Breezy to 2Pac after he dropped his Quavo diss . And if he’s getting compared to Pac and MJ, maybe Chris Brown’s impact and goathood should be reexamined through a different lens.
