The Texas Association of Secondary School Principals selected Graham Junior High School Principal Sam Perry and Assistant Principal Katherine Gallaway as Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year for Region 9.

The awards are presented to principals and assistant principals from 20 state Education Service Centers (ESC). Administrators are nominated by peers in their region and awards are based on performance and leadership.

Perry has been an administrator for six years and a member of the leadership team in Graham ISD since 2019.

He said he is thankful for mentors like GISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse, Graham High School Principal Joe Gordy, Terrell ISD Superintendent Georgeanne Warnock and his grandfather and father.

Gallaway has served in the capacity as principal for four years and been a member of the Graham ISD leadership team since 2023.

Perry said Gallaway has been a blessing for the GJHS campus.

“Her efforts to connect with each and every single student, be a positive female role model to our female students, and support our teachers in the campus goal of continuous improvement and excellence have to be applauded,” Perry said. “The assistant principal position is not always an easy job, but her positivity, toughness and personal integrity allows her to meet every challenge. I am proud to work alongside Mrs. Gallaway and I look forward to seeing her continue to grow as an administrator.”

In a post announcing the honor, Perry was recognized by Gallaway for mentoring and supporting her during her time as an administrator as well as teaching and growing her to be a future principal.

Gallaway was also thankful for her father for urging her to become an administrator and her mother for teaching her how to be the best educator. She also recognized Craig Utley for instilling knowledge of how to be a principal during her internship.
The two will compete for the state titles of Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year.

TASSP Region Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal Awards will be presented during the Josten’s Night of the Stars: Texas Heroes Awards Dinner which will be held in June 2025 in conjunction with the TASSP Summer Workshop.
