UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WJMN) — Operational changes by the Michigan Department of Corrections will mean fewer jobs in Baraga County, but more available beds for prisoners statewide.

The plan aims to make more Level IV security beds available, as well as address staffing problems at one prison. A spokesperson for the MDOC said the changes will affect the Baraga and Chippewa Correctional Facilities in the Upper Peninsula, as well as the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee.

In Baraga County, the closure of an 88-bed unit will cut the need for about 22 employees. In Chippewa County, the reopening of one unit will increase staffing needs by about 10 employees.

Heidi Washington, Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections said, “the changes announced today will provide relief to the staff at the Baraga Correctional Facility, which currently faces a significant amount of overtime due to vacancies. In addition, it will ensure we have additional Level IV custody beds to house individuals who need this increased level of management, which supports our facilities and helps keep our staff safe.”

Some units will be temporarily closed during he change process. Ultimately, 72 beds will be added to the MDOC system overall.

“While these changes are necessary, we recognize that we are asking the staff at the Chippewa Correctional Facility to take on an additional burden during this period, so I extend my gratitude to them on behalf of the Department and their colleagues,” added Washington.

The MDOC spokesperson said the department is actively hiring staff and corrections officers. You can learn more about opportunities they offer on their website .
