The company building the 45-turbine wind farm on 6,300 acres in Chowan County is accepting applications from local nonprofits for its Timbermill Wind Community Grants program.

Apex Energy said the company will consider applications that benefit the Chowan County community.

“Throughout its development, Timbermill Wind has proudly supported Chowan County community organizations and looks forward to continuing that commitment as the project moves towards commercial operation,” the company said in a press release. “We recognize the incredible work being done by local non-profit groups to build safe and healthy communities, support community and economic development, foster environmental sustainability, and promote education.”

Applications will be accepted through July 10 at the company’s website at www.timbermillwind.com/grant. Timbermill said small grants are encouraged.

“Multiple awardees are common, and grants are typically awarded in increments that fulfill a request completely or at least partially,” the release states. Proposals “demonstrating a commitment to widespread community benefit” receive priority for funding.

Apex awarded $21,000 in grants last year to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Albemarle, the Edenton Farmers Market, the Edenton Steamers baseball club, and the Chowan Arts Council.

Questions regarding the program should be addressed to Brian O’Shea of Apex Energy at brian.oshea@apexcleanenergy.com.
