ATHENS, WV (WVNS) — A specialized training event to help give information to foster, adoptive, and kinship families will be held by Concord University’s Social Work program.
From 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. from June 27, 2024 through June 29, 2024, Concord University’s Social Work program will hold a free event at Marsh Library on Concord University’s campus in the Athens area of Mercer County.
The specialized training event is open to current and past adoptive, foster, and kinship families, and will help provide the families with necessary knowledge and skills. During the event, the kids will work on their literacy skills with certified Mercer County teachers, as well as Dr. Kathy Hawks.
Dr. Hawks, Concord University’s Professor of Education and Coordinator of Clinical Experiences and faculty member since 2000, teaches in the elementary program at the undergraduate level, and the reading specialist program at the graduate level.
For 21 years before teaching at Concord University, Dr. Hawks served as a reading specialist and taught second, third, and fifth grades in public schools.
Refreshments will be available, attending families will get in-service training hours, and kids will receive a copy of the books used in literacy lessons at the event. Before children attend the event, they will need to finish preschool.
More information for the event, as well as registration, can be found by contacting Dr. Samantha Byrd by email at sbyrd@concord.edu or by phone 304-384-5353.
