In Your Community: Brownsdale Study Club

The Brownsdale Study Club met for breakfast at Alamo Annie’s on Friday, June 14. Then the group proceeded to the Mower County Historical Society Building in Austin.

After an enjoyable time browsing through archives, the meeting of the Brownsdale Study Club was called to order by President Shelly Vogel.

Five members read the Collect, followed by roll call, “An eye opening experience from this morning.”

There was no secretary or treasurer’s report.

There was no old business. Under new business, the date for our tea party celebrating our 100th year will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Members have the task of researching an interesting subject from 1924 that they would be willing to present at the tea party.

Mary Kidwiler Moritz made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Barb Swanson.

Mary shared some interesting snippets from June 1924.

The Republican presidential convention in Cleveland was the first to be broadcast over radio.

Ecuador became the First Nation in South America to grant women the right to vote.

The Newton Gang carried out the largest train robbery in history when it boarded the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad train near Rondout, Illinois seizing more than $3 million in cash and bonds.

Kleenex facial tissue was introduced on June 24.

85 people died when a tornado sped through Sandusky, Ohio.

Mary served a scrumptious Georgia peach pie.
