SALISBURY — A Rowan County man was arrested on Saturday after deputies said that he fled from a traffic stop on a motorcycle, only stopping when he had engine troubles.

The incident began at approximately 1 a.m., near mile marker 65 on the northbound side of Interstate 85. A deputy conducting traffic enforcement noticed a loud black motorcycle with glowing neon wheels drive past him at over 100 mph, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy then reportedly attempted to stop the motorcycle around the North Carolina Highway 152 exit. The driver of the motorcycle sped up to approximately 130 mph in an attempt to flee the deputy, weaving in and out of traffic before eventually exiting the interstate and turning right onto Julian Road, said McDaniel.

The driver allegedly continued at approximately 70 mph down Julian Road before attempting to turn right onto Old Concord Road. He was then forced to stop at the intersection due to the motorcycle experiencing engine problems and was arrested without incident, said McDaniel.

The driver, identified as 23-year-old Chandler Austin King, was charged with felony flee to elude, misdemeanor aggressive driving and speeding. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $20,000 bond, according to sheriff’s office reports.
