BAYBORO, N.C. (WNCT) — Just recently, there had been talks of budget cuts within the Pamlico County school system. On Monday, the county commissioners voted otherwise.

The commissioners approved the 2024-25 fiscal year budget without taking funding away from education. Initially, they discussed potentially cutting between $500,000 to $1 million in this year’s school budget after Pamlico County Superintendent Jeremy Johnson requested an increase of 10.2 percent.

Instead, commissioners voted on a 3.5% increase and Johnson said, although he’s grateful that there won’t be any cuts they will still have about a $300,000 deficit.

“I’m disappointed with the three-and-a-half percent budget but I certainly understand the difficult position they find themselves in, and so we’re gonna have to do what we have to do,” Johnson said.

Johnson also said the next step is to discuss cuts within their budget for the upcoming school year, which could be positions and services they offer at the schools.
