Planted in 1992, the Alderpoint Vineyard is located in Humboldt County, a ‘wild west’ region of Northern California known for its towering Redwoods and cannabis heyday. Featuring the Martini clone of Pinot Noir, Alderpoint has become a key vineyard source for Joseph Jewell Wines , beginning with the 2013 vintage. The 2021 Alderpoint Pinot Noir was selected by the The U.S. Department of State’s Executive Chef for a State Department luncheon in October of 2023. TODAY, Joseph Jewell Wines release out into the world their 2022 Alderpoint Pinot Noir.

With only 150 acres of grapes grown in the entire 2.5 million acre county, the few Humboldt County vineyards are hidden down long dirt roads, mostly undiscovered. With shale-like soils and positioned 500 feet above the middle fork of the Eel River, the Alderpoint vineyard has extremely low yields, often registering less than 2 tons per acre. The cooling influence of the river and the stony soils are essential in the development of flavors and textures that have become the signature of the wines from Alderpoint.

Joseph Jewell’s winemaker, Adrian Manspeaker, has been leading the quest to put the diverse region’s high-quality Pinot Noir on the map for well over a decade. It has taken the Humboldt native many years to find these tucked away vineyards, form relationships with the small farmers and understand the multitude of micro-climates.

The perfect equilibrium of fresh red fruits and acidity, the 2022 Alderpoint Pinot Noir unveils a complex bouquet beginning with a distinct impression of savory herbs, coupled with a subtle touch of salinity. Pomegranate adds a layer of fruity intrigue, while understated hints of vanilla and soy provide intriguing depth.
