If you’ve ever tried to give up coffee, you know how difficult it can be to stop. Between the headaches and the fatigue, it can make you question if it’s even worth quitting. However, there are ways to make this transition easier to manage.

Although it will still take willpower, this nurse’s tips can help. See how to increase your chances of staying off the caffeine in this video from June 2:

It may seem daunting, but Nurse Doza (@ nursedoza ) assures us we can maintain high energy levels even without coffee. His advice is practical and effective, and he doesn’t advocate replacing coffee with expensive alternatives.

Effective Ways To Keep Your Energy Up When You’re Ready To Quit Coffee

    1. Morning Sunlight. Nurse Doza describes that the morning sun is excellent for our brains “because it helps you produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and epinephrine,” which help fuel our brains and improve cognition. Morning sunlight can give us the energy to sustain us throughout the day. The benefits of sunlight also include the regulation of circadian rhythms, leading to better sleep. It can also help to increase our vitamin D levels, and optimal vitamin D has been linked to lowering the risk of many diseases, including cancer.

    2. Eating fewer carbs. He suggests eating lower glycemic carbs to prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can make us feel tired. If we eat a meal too high in carbs for lunch, we will probably experience a mid-afternoon sugar crash. After eating these high-carb meals, it can often make us feel as though we need a nap, and if we are giving up caffeine, this will feel even worse. If you have consumed a high-carb meal, taking a 10-minute walk after eating has been shown to lessen blood glucose levels. Adding plenty of vegetables to increase fiber, protein, and fat can also help slow the release of carbohydrates and blood sugar spikes .

Getting through those first few weeks is always the most challenging part of kicking the caffeine addiction . Nurse Doza tells us that if we combine this early morning sunlight with keeping our carbohydrate intake low, after a week or two, we might notice a sustainable improvement in our energy levels throughout the day. If you can’t quit cold turkey, you can always lessen the caffeine you consume daily, a little at a time. That way, you can avoid the headaches and unwanted side effects of breaking the habit.

While giving up caffeine is never easy, it can be worthwhile. You may be surprised to learn that you have more energy without it than when drinking it.
