If we were to ask designers to define one kitchen trend that's shaped kitchen design in 2024, they would likely agree on wood's revival. In recent months particularly, natural, unpainted wood has taken center stage in the most stylish of kitchens – including in some of our favorite celebrity homes (Jennifer Aniston and Zendaya, we're looking at you). However, no home lends itself to this organic aesthetic quite like Anne Hathaway's Californian abode.

The actress and her husband, jewelry creator Adam Shulman, reside in a cozy Alpine-inspired cabin (in collaboration with Studio Shamshiri), meaning the entire space (as we might expect from a cabin) celebrates wood in all its beauty. Naturally, this includes the kitchen, where this material reigns supreme.

While many may opt for wooden kitchen cabinets , Hathaway incorporated wood via her backsplash, shelving, and paneled wall (while her cabinetry is painted a mint, dusty-green hue. The space is a reminder of just how versatile this kitchen trend can be – so it's no surprise it's set to continue dominating for 2025.

'Natural unpainted wood is beautiful and versatile, so no wonder it's making a comeback in kitchen design. Clients are looking for warmer palettes, and there is a desire for natural, honest materials, making timber the perfect choice,' comments Dave Young, the founder of HUSK kitchens .

'People are moving towards cozier interiors, they want to feel in touch with the landscape and be surrounded by the beauty of a natural and sustainable material. Wood's rich tones and sweeping grain bring complexity and character to a room. Plus, it's a classic that has instant longevity.'

Unlike more daring kitchen colors , unpained cabinets take things back to basics – in the most beautiful way possible. Homes and Gardens' digital editor, Jennifer Ebert, says this is the reason for its dominance in the months ahead – and through to 2025.

'The wooden kitchen revival is one of the most refreshing trends to emerge from this year, and its beauty, versatility, and ability to work with almost every other hue means it will live on long into 2025 and beyond,' she begins.

As mentioned, in many cases, we see wood used on kitchen cabinets ; however, Hathaway's twist on the trend shows there are other ways to tap into the look. It's this versatility that, Ebert says, is keeping the movement alive.

'Unlike some colors that are often only fit for cabinets, natural wood is flexible and durable enough to work elsewhere in the kitchen – whether that's through a backsplash or shelf like Hathaway or somewhere on your island – for the ultimate focal point.'
