Home décor trends come and go. While it’s cheap and easy to toss a fresh coat of neutral paint on interior walls as you prepare your home for sale , other décor decisions may not be as quick to cover up.

As much as they might fit your aesthetic, experts advise avoiding these home décor trends if you’re fixing up your home for a fast and profitable sale.

    A Brightly Colored Accent Wall

Accent walls can capture your home’s personality and liven up your living space. But avoid getting too daring with color if you plan to sell your home. More than half of all prospective homebuyers (53%) said they are put off by red or lime green walls, according to Fixr’s Paint & Color Trends 2024 study, as reported by the National Association of Realtors blog.

“When selling a house, paint and color trends need to be used in a softened way,” Birgit Anich of BA Staging & Interiors said in the Fixr study. “[Buyers] need to have certain exposure to a new trend before they fall in love with the new trend. While these trends are great for interior design, they need to be used in a more moderate way when selling a property.”

    Feature Headboards

A stylish statement headboard can become a focal point of your bedroom. However, it may not appeal to prospective buyers, according to SellingWarnerRobins.com.

If you’re considering upgrading your bedroom for a faster sale, choose a subtle headboard and a king-size bed, one of the many features that may help your home sell faster, according to a recent study from Frontdoor.com.

    Barn Doors

Barn doors have been popular in the current decade, which means some sellers and buyers may view them as attractive. But they also risk turning off some buyers, real estate agent Maureen McDermut of Sotheby’s International told HomesandGardens.com.

“[B]uyers don’t want to have to convert these into traditional doors,” she said.

    Textured Ceilings

Similarly, suppose you embraced a textured ceiling in recent years or have yet to get rid of your home’s popcorn ceiling from the 20th century. In that case, you might want to consider a renovation project before you put your home on the market.

“Typically, the removal of popcorn ceilings can be an additional expense and an inconvenience for potential homeowners,” Chelsea Werner, global real estate advisor at ONE Sotheby’s, told BetterHomesandGardens.com.

    Wallpaper

Wallpaper is a design trend that never seems to fade away. You might even say it’s as tough to get rid of as the glue that bonds it to your wall!

According to BetterHomesandGardens.com , the latest wallpaper trends include “bold, graphic, whimsical” designs that harken back to the 1970s, floral patterns, and even stripes.

But if you’re planning to sell your home any time soon, think twice before spending time and money on this trend. Wallpaper is a hassle to remove and can leave potential buyers wondering about the condition of the walls underneath. That may cause them to make a low-ball offer or walk away without considering your house.

    Patterned Tiles

Interior designers on Buzzfeed pointed to black-and-white checkerboard tiles and Herringbone patterns as two of the latest home décor trends.

“Checkerboard has been having a moment, and the moment isn’t over yet,” designer Tommy Landen Huerter told Buzzfeed.com. “I like it as a pattern, but I have a feeling it will go out as quickly as it came in.”

If that’s not reason enough to avoid it, and you’re considering selling your home, consider that it’s not exactly a neutral design that home stagers recommend.

The same goes for Herringbone or other complex patterns on bathroom floors or walls. “Stick to a monochromatic and simple look,” wrote SellingWarnerRobins.com.

    Tile Countertops

Tile countertops add visual interest to your kitchen, according to SellingWarnerRobins.com. But they can also be high maintenance, with a tendency to crack and a need to clean and even replace the grout over time.

On the other hand, according to the Frontdoor.com study, butcher block, marble, or granite countertops are more likely to lead to a faster sale, as they are low-maintenance, easy to clean, and provide timeless style.
