Roses and hydrangeas bring a splash of color to gardens and are fairly low maintenance to boot. The duration of their blooming periods depends on the variety and how they're cared for, but it's typically a few months.

One gardening expert suggests that using banana peel can prolong the bloom of roses and hydrangeas. John Dempsey, a gardening expert at Housetastic, claims applying two to three peels to the plant's soil will offer a " huge advantage ."

For those introducing roses or hydrangeas into their garden landscape, chop up the peel and deposit it in the soil, reports the Express . But if your plants are already a few years old, just place the banana peel on top of the soil.

Dempsey advises: "You should put a chopped banana peel in the bottom of the hole before inserting the plant and mixing the rest with compost and soil around the new plant."

Banana peels can introduce potassium to the soil, enriching it and encouraging roses to "bloom for longer." The peels also contain other key nutrients like calcium, iron, and copper which aid the growth of both roses and hydrangeas.

The gardening ace added: "Watering the soil thoroughly afterwards will aid in the breakdown of the peels and will support new growth. Placing a banana peel on the ground near the base of the plants is the simplest way to increase potassium levels. Chopping the peel first reduces the time it takes for the peel to degrade, allowing the potassium to reach your plants sooner."

Coffee grounds and tea bags can work wonders in the garden, while also helping to keep pests at bay. Eggshells are another perfect supplement that helps nourish outdoor plants and flowers. Just place them around the border or container of plants to deter slugs and snails.
