    Martin County Sheriff mourning loss of K-9 Spike

    MARTIN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Law enforcement in Martin County are mourning the unexpected death of one of their K-9 officers.

    According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office , Spike’s handler, Sheriff’s Captain Larry Gibson, passed along the news Sunday morning that Spike had died.

    Spike was born in Bavaria, Germany in December of 2017. Spike had worked with Captain Gibson since June of 2019. Spike was a dual-purpose trained K-9, adept at both patrol and drug detection.

    “In K-9 Spike’s off-duty time, he loved to play fetch and playing with Captain Gibson’s kids,” The sheriff’s post reads. “K-9 Spike played a huge role in the lives of the employees of the Sheriff’s Office, the community, and Captain Gibson’s family.”
