HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials say part of KY 70 in Muhlenberg County will be temporarily closed this afternoon near milepoint 11.3 to remove an abandoned railroad bridge, which was damaged during a recent crash.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC ) says a vehicle had hit the structure and caused significant damage to the wooden supports of the former Peabody Coal railroad bridge, which was built in 1961. An inspection by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on Tuesday determined that although the bridge is not an immediate danger to motorists, it does need to be removed as soon as possible.

The KYTC says it is working on a plan to remove the abandoned bridge this afternoon so the roadway can be reopened as quickly as possible. The roadway will be closed beginning at 3 p.m. this afternoon and is expected to reopen by Wednesday morning.
