11,000 People Died From Heat In America Last Year

The US will be hotter than last year based on the weather through mid-June. Many cities have already posted record temperatures and the summer peak is likely two months away. So far, the heat has primarily moved from west to east, and part of the northeast will get 100-degree-plus weather this week. Based on certain vulnerable people in the population and the length that the “heat dome” stays in any area, hundreds of people will die from heat-related illnesses this year. Last year, the figure was estimated at 11,000, which may be undercounted.

Climate News –A Sharp Rise In The Worst Weather

According to PBS, the federal government count of heat-related deaths was under 3,000. However, the new channel reports, a Texas A&M report, said, “…about 11,000 heat deaths likely occurred in 2023 in the U.S. — a figure that would represent a record since at least 1987 and is about five times the number reported on death certificates.”

India’s Problem

The undercount is common. In large, developing world nations like India, the deaths from heat could be well into the tens of thousands, if not higher. A true count is impossible with 1.3 billion people and a country that covers 1.3 million square miles. Additionally, the public health system is such that a count that is even close to accurate may never happen.

The annual heat death figure in the US will continue to rise. The effects of global warming are such that a reverse in the fatalities is nearly impossible.
