Rescued Chihuahua Puppy's First Time on a Leash Ends in Epic Hops

Rescue dogs often have a lot of things they'll need to learn. They may not know how to do "normal" dog things, like sit, go potty outside, or walk on a leash. When you're rescuing a dog (and a puppy in particular), you need to be prepared to have a lot of patience with them.

On Saturday, June 15th, one rescue dog mom found this out in the funniest, hoppiest way. While this pup may not be the best leash walker in the world, she is certainly the best girl:

Kali and Nina are the sweetest sisters I may ever see in my life, and I have a sister of my own. Nothing compares to two sweet Chihuahua pups!

Kali, the pup in this video, was found first. Her rescue mom was driving down the road when she saw her, and unfortunately, she saw no mom or other relatives around, and Kali wasn't wearing a collar. She took her home and fixed her up, thereby becoming their mom's first rescue!

And then, a few days later, mom was driving down the same road when she noticed another pup; this one was the same color as Kali, but has a slightly more wiry coat. Again, no mom and no more relatives, so she took her home to her sister and named her Nina. Since then, they're grown to be fine young ladies who are very appreciative of their mama!

Since bringing them home, their mom has learned that Nina definitely wears the pants, and she says she even tries to bully Kali during feeding time. Luckily, feeding them separately will help mitigate the issue! For now, the biggest issue the girls are having is that they're not very good at walking on the leash. The jumping is happening because, as a new sensory thing, leashes feel weird. Kali is trying to get away!

    Should You Rescue Littermates?

Obviously, when you see stray puppies on a random road, you're not going to leave them, regardless of whether they're littermates or not.

Whether you keep them together for the rest of their lives will depend on your capabilities; Littermate Syndrome is a very serious risk with puppies who are around the same age, even if they're not technically littermates. If you bring home two puppies at once, you need to watch out for:

    1. Anxiety when they're taken away from each other.
    2. Issues with training or eating independently.
    3. Excessive fighting between the siblings.
    4. Reactivity

We have virtually no idea how old Kali and Nina are, but the main cause of Littermate Syndrome is a lack of socialization with humans and other dogs. While it's generally not recommended to bring home two puppies at once, it is technically possible. You just have to use your best judgement!
