BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Del. Todd Kirby, a Republican, presented an $8,000 check to Raleigh County Sheriff Jim Canaday on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to assist district agencies with investigations of crimes against children.

The check comes from the Legislature’s discretionary funds, according to Del. Kirby.

Sheriff Canaday said crimes against children, including online crimes, continue to plague society.

“I’ve got to say that, in the years I’ve been in law enforcement, I was shocked at the number of child exploitation crimes that are out there, the number of people that actually try to come here or to lure our children somewhere else,” Sheriff Canaday noted. “It was shocking to me.”

He said the money will be used to assist investigators in tracking down criminals and preventing crimes against children, including online crimes.

Del. Kirby said the check presented Tuesday was the last he would present as a state lawmaker, at least for the near future.

In May, Kirby was elected to serve as a Raleigh County Circuit Court judge.
