PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – When the temperatures are on the rise, many look for ways to cool off.

One of the most popular methods to cool off is to break out some nice refreshing ice. However, ice could produce harmful effects if you are not careful.

Princeton Community Hospital ER Registered Nurse Hannah Dunn told 59News about ways that people can properly utilize ice throughout the summer months.

“You do not want to put it directly to the skin. If you are already too hot, you want to [make] a barrier,” said Dunn. “If you are already that hot, you are not going to realize if it is too cold and it can leave a burn. If you have a shirt on, at least try to put it over [the ice], any kind of towels, anything like that [can be useful].”

Ice is also a good thing to eat throughout the summer to help beat the heat.

Dunn said that hydration is key throughout the summertime months, whether it be water or electrolyte-filled drinks.
